The previous emerge --info was for the wrong computer.  Here is the correct emerge --info for the computer I was building stepmania on:

We have fixed this problem on the final stepmania-3.9 (not rc).
Unfortunately this ebuild, as for 13-10-2006, is not yet marked stable.
Test the ~version and reopen it if you get the same problem again
