Description Arne Flagge 2006-09-20 03:23:10 UTC
I did a fresh install of vmware-server on a server without X.

vmware fails with:
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: error while loading shared libraries: libXi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Emerge of libXi resolve the failure.

Ok, thanks for the heads up. I'll check out the dependencies and add it in. Just to help me out, could you please send me the exact command that you ran and the output you got from it. I'm assuming it's just something like "/etc/init.d/vmware start", but I'd like to make sure. Thanks very much... 5:)
Comment 2 Arne Flagge 2006-09-20 23:31:20 UTC
No, '/etc/init.d/vmware start' works. When I want to open the "build in" console with 'vmware' I get:
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: error while loading shared libraries:
libXi.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Comment 3 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-21 10:02:10 UTC
Ok, that's expected behaviour. There were several requests to allow for vmware-server to be installed on a headless X server. I am intending in the future to remove the "built-in" console, since there is a perfectly good actual console in a separate build that pulls in all the extra X requirements, and can co-incide with a standard server build without problem. That's also there reason there is no symlink to the vmware binary. So, whilst I don't like saying it, I'm afraid I'm going to mark this as WONTFIX, and state that the recommended method of connecting to vmware-server on a gentoo installation is to use the separate vmware-server-console package. Sorry... 5:(
