I have the same problem here in my Gentoo box where hplip-1.6.7 works fine with cups-1.2.2 but does not works at all with cups-1.2.3.

Sorry, I was too fast. BTW to fix this bug in cups-1.2.3, you must apply the following patch. It's now included in the stable release of cups-1.2.4.
