when i took a look at kdemultimedia-3.1.ebuild, i noticed that xine integration is still disabled. i simply tried to uncomment it, but as a result my compile failed. maybe one with a little more knowledge can have a look at this?
The xine integration requires the old xine api. The new api (starting with the xine-lib-1.0 prereleases, and maybe even before this in 0.9.x) is not supported and causes, as you say, a compile failure. When the kde cvs is updated to work with the latest xine api, we'll have working support in the ebuilds, however that probably will not in the kde 3.1.x tree :-( An alternative would be the standalone kxine (see kxine.sf.net) which is being worked on but has had no releases for quite some time now. Nothing I can do about this, unfortunately.
Noatun works fine here with the xine-API (xine-0.9.13), I can play most video-files. So I can't confirm the statement in the ebuild ("xine doesn't compile yet").

Fridtjof: to get xine working, you only merged xine-lib-0.9.13 and removed the KDE_REMOVE_DIR=xine_artsplugin from the kdemultimedia ebuild? i dunno much about xine, sorry.
Clarification, as I understand matters: we have xine 1.0_beta2 as stable, beta4 as ~. kde won't work with anything newer than 0.9.13.
Well, nothing we can do about it. kde 3.2 will of course include support for xine 1.x...
