This sounds like an error in SDL. Can you please give me the output of emerge -pv libsdl

The problem is not with libsdl, but with sdl-image. I last compiled sdl-image almost 2 years ago, and I'm guessing I must have removed the svga USE flag at some point after that. Anyway, I remerged sdl-mixer, and then vlc was able to compile successfully. So, feel free to close if you think this is ok.
