when i compile the driver it compiles fine (no errors), then i enabled it in the genkernel by setting it as a module in video capture adapters--quickcam colur video for linux when i try to use it by running it in spcaview it begins to open the video and just freezes up my computer. I have to press the power button to restart it freezes that bad. i dont know what to do. your help would be most appreciated! :)

Well, something interesting in syslog at least? Hard to guess ;)
Comment 2 Robert 2006-09-15 22:12:08 UTC
Same problem for me. When spaceview (or also qgview) start to read video, my computer completly freeze. After restart I find no messag in any log :/
After some googling, It seems to me that the probleme is related to ggc4, but I don't know what to do with this ..... :)

Comment 3 codyzapp 2006-09-16 00:01:57 UTC
yeah, exactly the same! and no nothing is in syslog. i hope a fix comes out soon.
Comment 4 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-16 07:51:21 UTC
spca5xx is dead upstream, they are redoing the driver for v4l2 and renaming it gspca. No code is available yet. The latest release works on my kits, x86_64/2.6.17 and x86/2.6.16 both use gcc 3.4. You could try recompiling your kernel with gcc-3.4 and then re-merging spca5xx, though the version claims to be gcc-4.1.0 compatable.

One thought, don't use USB keyboards/mice on the same controller as your camera. This has been known in the past to cause some problems.

I'll test gcc4 on my x86 boc, but I suspect it'll work fine.
Comment 5 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-16 10:41:38 UTC
I tested with gcc4.1, worked just fine.
Comment 6 codyzapp 2006-09-16 14:11:57 UTC
well it doesnt work on mine.. so your saying the best thing to do now would be to switch back to a earlier gcc version and recompile my kernel? Then Ofcourse reemerge spca5xx? all i have is two usb ports being used out of the 5. one is to my webcam (logitech quickcam IM) and my printer.
Comment 7 codyzapp 2006-09-16 19:57:52 UTC
and what exact version of gcc do you know that works... gcc-3.4.5-r2 or what.. please say exactly which one...
Comment 8 codyzapp 2006-09-16 22:33:33 UTC
okay your idea worked. i emerged gcc-3.4.5 and also i wanted to tell you, that u can have 2 versions of gcc runing at once all u need to do is emerge the other version of gcc and switch to the other version of gcc by running(for example) gcc-config i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.5 then update ur profile (source /etc/profile). after that you must compile your kernel with the older gcc. once i did this then i rebooted and emerged spca5xx driver then emerged spcaview Boom! thats it. i hope they fix this newer version of this driver with gcc-4.1. anyways thank you for all your help!
cody

oh and dont run gcc-config -L like you would java because it doesnt show all versions of gcc. just the first one u emerged
