When I try to emerge php I get the following (version 5.1.4-r6 works fine for me): 
checking for DB1 support... no
checking for DBM support... no
checking for cdb_read in -lcdb... no
checking for cdb_read in -lc... no
configure: error: DBA: Could not find necessary library. 

My USE flags for this package:

You didn't follow the instructions when upgrading openssl.

revdep-rebuild --library libssl.so.0.9.7
revdep-rebuild --library libcrypto.so.0.9.7

After this, you can delete /usr/lib/libssl.so.0.9.7 and /usr/lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.7 and try again.

Well, your cdb is broken, I don't see how is this PHP fault. Try with dev-db/cdb-0.75-r1 if you haven't yet.

I was having the same problem, and I solved it by adding the gdbm use flag to dev-lang/php.

Seems fixed today... I will close the bug, If anybody is still afected (after updating its system) I will reopen it ;-)
