The 2006.1 liveCD does not contain manual installation instructions, only GUI/CMD installer instructions! The manual installation instructions are important for several reasons: 1) the GUI/CMD installers don't do everything, and lots of users still prefer the old way 2) troubleshooting network problems often requires a liveCD. if docs aren't on the CD, they can't be used!
I don't see what you mean "the old way", but if it's stage 1/2 then it's not supported.
The LiveCD is meant as a networkless install medium, so the instructions for doing a network install using that CD are present. If you want to do it the "old way", you need network access, and you can then grab the regular handbook from www.gentoo.org.
The CD only had the manual instructions for doing a GRP install. Since there are no snapshots or GRP packages available, as well as no distfiles, it doesn't exactly make much sense to have documents referring to them on the CD, now, does it? If you mean the networked handbook, that hasn't been on the LiveCD/Universal CD for a few releases now. We only put the networkless instructions on the CD images, since they're what you need. If you're doing a manual installation, you'll need Internet access, anyway. There is the Getting_Online.txt file, which is the Getting Online section of the Handbook. Anything else would be superfluous.
The liveCD is more than a simple install tool, it's also a valuable resource for troubleshooting critical issues on existing Gentoo machines (we don't call it an Install CD now do we?). Not only that, but I really can't see how we can justify leaving out what has been the best part of Gentoo since it began, the docs! Do we really want to encourage future users to be completely oblivious to the inner workings of Gentoo Linux? Here are some examples of where docs on the liveCD have been really useful to me: 1) When I brought a Gentoo laptowp to another country where my only internet access was ADSL with PPPoE, but I didn't have rp-pppoe and ppp installed, and I didn't know how they would work. (and for some reason Starbucks thinks it's ok to sell overpriced coffee and charge for wireless at the same time (using some scary sytem that requires lots of personal information)). In this case, I needed the docs on the liveCD to figure out how to mount partitions (to copy distfiles over from a USB key), get a DSL connection configured, and configure a kernel for PPP. LVM docs would also have been very useful. 2) In my previous job, Linux machines didn't always have network access. There were Windows Active Directory based proxies/filters, and my installs needed to be done without network access until I could get things like samba installed... 3) I break things often, and I don't always have network access when I need to get things fixed. This is by far the most common use of the liveCD for me, and having the docs on the CD has always been an important part of my troubleshooting process I am reopening this bug because I think we should really consider getting more docs on the liveCD, especially the old manual install docs. I don't mean stage1/2, I mean the plain old Handbook from the web site that explains how to chroot, how to use fdisk, how to get network devices working, etc. We can't assume everyone has network access every time they use the LiveCD, just like we can't assume that the installers are a good solution for all of our users. If space is an issue, we could simply include a bzipped 80 column text file of the handbook... anything is better than nothing.
OK. Apparently, the idea of WONTFIX was lost, so I'll state it explicitly. We have *no* intentions on adding additional documentation to the CD. There are two Handbooks, networked, and networkless. The networkless Handbook is included on the CD. The networked Handbook is not. This is not going to change. As I previously stated, there is already a Getting_Online.txt, which is that section from the networked Handbook. I am sorry that this does not meet with your expectations of what should be on the CD, but you've made your opinion known via this request, and the people in charge of performing the work required to satisfy your request have chosen to not do it. This is the definition of WONTFIX. No matter how many times you REOPEN this bug, it is *still* a WONTFIX, so please save us the frustration of having to close this bug repeatedly. Thank you
