To reproduce: - install krusader without the rest of kde (probably konqueror makes the difference) - click on the yellow start button , - click on manage bookmarks - nothing happens To fix: emerge konqueror I do not know if konqueror or another package includes the bookmark editor but installing konqueror fixes the problem. (this was also reported here for an ubuntu system http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=473967) I have attached also what packages I had installed before and after I fixed the problem. A solution is to make konqueror a dependency of krusader but I do not know if this is the best solution. emerge --info : Gentoo Base System version 1.12.4 Portage 2.1-r2 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.3.6-r4, 2.6.15-gentoo-r1-Urath-4 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.15-gentoo-r1-Urath-4 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ ccache version 2.3 [enabled] app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: 2.3 dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -funroll-all-loops -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/gconf /etc/java-config/vms/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -funroll-all-loops -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.roedu.net/pub/mirrors/gentoo.org/ ftp://ftp.caliu.info/pub/gentoo/ ftp://mirror.etf.bg.ac.yu/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.lug.ro/gentoo" LINGUAS="en ro" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X alsa apach2 apache2 apm arts avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 cli crypt dlloader doc dri eds emboss encode esd foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal imlib isdnlog java jpeg libg++ libwww mad mikmod motif mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl ogg opengl oss pam pcre pdflib perl png pppd python qt qt3 qt4 quicktime quiktime readline reflection sdl session spell spl ssl svg tcpd threads truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb vorbis xml xml2 xmms xorg xv xvid yahoo zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux linguas_en linguas_ro userland_GNU video_cards_nvidia video_cards_vesa video_cards_fbdev" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

AFAIK there are plans for Krusader's own bookmark manager, unfortunately that won't happen before the KDE4 port. 1.80.0 will be the last release for KDE3, and we are already in a freeze. Making Konqueror a runtime dependency will indeed solve the problem, but like Carlo pointed out in bug #173028, that surely won't be a very popular solution. What do you think about a post install message which informs the user, that konqueror has to be emerged in order to manage the bookmarks?
I've added information about this to the post-install message. Committed to CVS.
