Description Nick Fish 2003-01-28 12:10:10 UTC
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html:
"Note that the lists are updated frequently, so please do not cache them and
please do not reveal links to the lists themselves. Please do reveal a link to
this page, so that users will always see the rules of engagement below. Note
that the names of the lists themselves are changed on a regular basis in order
to discourage direct links.

<B>Rules of Engagement</B>

As the load on the hosts supporting NTP primary (stratum 1) time service is
heavy and always increasing, clients should avoid using the primary servers
whenever possible. In most cases the accuracy of the NTP secondary (stratum 2)
servers is only slightly degraded relative to the primary servers and, as a
group, the secondary servers may be just as reliable."

I suggest changing the lines of the ntp.conf file installed by the ebuild from:
"##
# A list of available servers is available here:
# * http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock1a.html
# and
# * http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2a.html
##"

to instead read:
"##
# Please see http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html
# to locate suitable servers.
##"

or minimally:
""##
# A list of available servers is available here:
# * http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/clock2a.html
##"

So that we are not encouraging users doing the quick install to link against
Stratum-1 servers.

Attached are patches to the ntp.conf file included with ebuild for either of my
suggestions as well as a ChangeLog.

david, i dont see what your ntp.conf is supposed to fix ...
Comment 7 David Klann 2003-12-08 11:45:37 UTC
Mike,

The bug title led me to believe this was an effort to "redirect" Gentoo users to public NTP servers that aren't overloaded. The copy of ntp.conf I attached is supposed to direct them to the ntp.org preferred server. Please let me know if I mis-interpreted this bug ID.

See http://www.pool.ntp.org/ for more info.

i saw the reference to this URL in your ntp.conf:
http://www.eecis.udel.edu/~mills/ntp/servers.html

that was part of the earlier problem and why we switch to listing the clock2a.html URL first

i didnt know of this www.pool.ntp.org site so i think switching the ntp.conf to list only that site instead of the udel.edu would be a good idea

anyone against such a change ?
