I emerged wpa_supplicante with the qt3 USE flag. This installs /usr/bin/wpa_gui and /usr/share/applications/wpa_gui-wpa_supplicant.desktop. The desktop file references the icon wpa_supplicant.png, but this icon is not installed by wpa_supplicant.
wpa_supplicant does not include an icon. Get upstream to include one or make one yourself and post that upstream :)

So the first option is moot. About the second one, imho it's part of the distributions work to do such integration work. Why not use an existing icon in /usr/share/pixmaps|/usr/share/icons for wpa_gui-wpa_supplicant.desktop until it ships its own icon.

Why not tell me which icons are available on all desktop configurations? That's right, none! So upstream will have to include one.
