Description Tango 2006-09-05 19:34:46 UTC
For some time now I have not been able to burn CD's in Gnome 2.12 or 2.14 as a normal user. I get no errors in dmesg and the only thing Gnome states is "error writing to cd". I can do it as root but I make many coasters in the process or the completed media is un-mountable or un-readable.

At one time it worked flawlessly but then it broke. I have searched the forums and posted a couple pleas for assistance. After not finding a solution to the problem I decided to dig deep into this problem. Googleing led me to belive that cdrecord is having issues running as anything but root.

To fix I downgraded to cdrtools-2.01-r3, and can now burn flawless cds.

Shrug... Go tell Jörg Schilling to fix his junk instead of fighting with kernel developers, or try app-cdr/cdrkit (package.masked for testing).

Jakob this isn't the way to deal with this bug. Please respect JS, he is a great developer.

Ok Tango do you have your user on cdrw, hal, plugdev groups ?

I guess I can understand your frustration. This problem has been a burr under my butt for some time now. I have read other like comments on this same subject, but sending Mr. Schilling a note trashing his work, isn't going to solve the problem. It seems I am the only one in the Gentoo community having this problem that, I am aware of, based on the forums. Maybe I need to look else where for a better solution. It might be I need to try a newer kernel or at the least go through to currant config much closer.

I checked for this very carefully and and the drive permissions as well. The groups my user belong to are, audio, cdrom, video, cdrw, wheel, floppy, usb, plugdev, and games.

Oddly I only have the haldaemon:x:409:haldaemon group and my user is not a member of that group. Also there is no mention in the emerge of hal that states I need to add my user to that group, that I know of. When I emerged gamin it clearly told me to make sure my user was added to the plugdev group. I will check the elog's again to see if I missed something. My system is a very old stage1 (stable) install and many things have changed over the last couple of years. So this could be something I missed along the way.

While I don't use Gnome I found that cdrtools-2.01.01 alpha version produce invalid CDs. If I used that version the cd produced could be mounted but generally it was garbage. When I downgraded to 2.01-r3 everything worked well. As far as I am concerned this is problem is not due to the cpu used since I have a Pentium 4.

Which CDR-device do you have? There are known issues with non-root-writing on Plextor burners.

Plextor 716A, and you are correct. I did some googleing and found this device to be an expensive parer weight. While it works ok in windows it does have issuses there as well, and this drives life span appears to be only about 75 to 100 burning operations on average. I could use some versions of cdr-tools ok with it but at times would produce disks that conldn't be used. I replaced the device wiht a cheap LG (to test with), which to date has worked very well with all stable versions of cdr-tools.

This is not true for all Plextor drives as my server's drive is working perfectly and has for many years, however it is only a CDRW devive not a DVDRW. I would just caution folks to do a little researh on DVD devices before acctually buying one.
