Description Peter `MathFox' Roozemaal 2006-09-05 03:53:36 UTC
On a headless application server programs like gvim and glade abort with the following message:

No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

man fontconfig draws "No manual entry for fontconfig"

I'ld like to get instructions on how to get fontconfig use the font metrics of my (remote) X server; some X(gtk) programs are happy with the remote fonts.

Erm, man fonts-conf and all the other manpages and docs in /usr/share/doc/fontconfig-<version> that you get w/ USE="doc" are not enough? In that case, you'll have to submit your own improved docs upstream.

(And, there's no fontconfig(3) in the fontconfig tarball, the message you get is wrong (upstream issue, send it to authors of the app that spits out this message).
