Description Luis Mayoral 2006-09-04 11:07:36 UTC
I tried to boot with the universal PPC64 install CD with no luck.

It seems to load the kernel but get freezed in the moment he tries to switch to graphical mode at boot time (it happens booting with "G5" or "G5 nofb"). CD stops and after a few seconds fans start to make a lot of noise.

My hardware is an iMag G5 1,9 Ghz w/iSight (powermac12,1 - a.k.a. powerpc 970fx 3.1). Graphics card is an ATI Radeon X600 Pro (chipset ATY,RV370).

well.. I don't know if this is releated, but I also see this behaviour with an X800 I just bought for my G5.

It's worth noting that there is a x600 XT and x600 Pro. The latter of which is in the 20" isight and does not seem to be supported at all by the linux kernel.

terrasoft claims to support the 17" version based on the XT.

if we can find the proper driver, I am happy to build a one-off experimental CD based on 2006.1.

Ok, wrt to my last post, the 20" is not what's in question, it is the difference between the Xt and Pro.

Ok. It boots with "video=ofonly", but the fans are still working at 100%.

iMac G5 rev B with nvidia gfx required video=ofonly to boot with 2006.1 livecd - otherwise got a black screen. video=nvidiafb resulted in the same black screen, but all seems to be working well with nvidiafb with installed system.

Can you try this on a 2007.0 CD, please?

Let's please close this. Another user came into irc recently and used the new ISO on his iMac. It worked as well as expected; that is, there is some thermal control issues that are not handled by the Linux kernel yet.

Anyways, he was able to install from the minimal cd.

I'll mark as fixed; Chris if you wanna close, please do
