Description Dominique Michel 2006-09-01 03:27:52 UTC
Hi,

I am not sure if it is a bug or a feature, but I get a strange issue with modules-update. I am doing the gcc4 upgrade by doing a fresh new install on a free partition. I copied my current /etc/modules.d/alsa to the new partition, but when I run modules-update, nothing appened and /etc/modules.conf or /etc/modprobe.conf was not updated.

To solve it, it was necessary to open /etc/modules.d/alsa file in a editor and save it.
After that, modules-update was running just fine.

If it is a feature, I think at it will be a good thing to talk about it in the alsa installation guide.

If can maybe be a concern with other configuration files as those for modules-update.

One more thing: I have the noatime option for the partition where I am doing the install in the fstab that was in use when copying the file.

my only guess is that the timestamp of /etc/modules.d/alsa was older than /etc/modules.conf

in that case you would have had to run with the --force flag

So it is a feature. Sorry for the noise.

I still thing at it will be good to take about it somewhere in the doc. The problem is where. because it is no chroot installation doc. The doc that seam to be more approrpiate is the knoopix installation, because if you change knoopix by gentoo in the text, you get what I was doing.

But maybe at it is a better place for that, the handbook or the forum.
