Quoting default /etc/rc.conf on a fresh ~x86 installation: ...XSESSION stuff... Defaults depending on what you install currently include: .. # kde-<version> - will start startkde (ex: kde-3.0.2) But when I tried 'XSESSION="kde-3.5.4"' it failed to startx. So then I looked in /etc/X11/Sessions/: $ ls -l /etc/X11/Sessions/ total 8 -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2187 Aug 31 00:14 Xsession -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 41 Aug 31 01:20 kde-3.5 I changed it to say "kde-3.5" and KDE started on startx. It would recommend changing either one (or the help text or the Session filename).
