please update the ebuild to a newer ethereal version or make the ethereal
dependency optional.

proposed kismet ebuild (optional ethereal dependency)

the mandatory ethereal dependency is a pain in the ass... ethereal takes so
long to compile...  pleas make it optional.

the ebuild should be edited

test if ethereal exists in ${distfiles}, if exists copy
this can save bandwith and time

rather than doing s/\/usr\/local/\/usr/g, you could just do 's:/usr/local:/usr:g' ... 
also, ethereal is not a valid USE variable

I know ethereal is not a valid USE variable... but how can we make the ethereal
dependency optional ?

also, not all the ethereal source code have to be compiled, only the subdir
containing the wiretap library.

kismet 2.8.1 is out... 

please add the fix to that version ;)
