During the installation I was using the doc's stored on the cd and the web page,
a reference to CONFIG_PROTECT= was listed on both, the one the cd  had
CONFIG_PROTECT="", the web site CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"

I assume it was supposed to be CONFIG_PROTECT="-*"?

Yeah, it is supposed to be the one on the web.
Please remember that the website docs are the most up to date. The CD guide is
dumped from the web to the CD at creation time. Please consult the web docs for
bleeding edge documentation.
