gnome-terminal starts up then exits after displaying: "Could not execute
command: no such file or directory."

eterm, xterm and Konsole do not display this error.

do you have a shell set for your user ?

The user had their shell set to sh rather than /bin/bash. Changing it to /bin/bash resolved the problem.
