After upgrading to ~x86 automake 1.7.x and autoconf 2.57, I have this: laptop autoconf # autom4te ac-wrapper: ouch, couldn't call binary (/usr/bin/autom4te-2.13). laptop autoconf # ls -l /usr/bin/autom4te* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 29 Jan 23 23:17 /usr/bin/autom4te -> ../lib/autoconf/ac-wrapper.pl -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 33532 Jan 23 23:17 /usr/bin/autom4te-2.57 ------- What gives? Didn't have time to throughly test this, will do so tomorrow...

err, this has been like this forever ? autoconf-2.1 *never* had an autom4te ...
So shouldn't ac-wrapper be fixed? Or are you saying that since the default 'mode' (barring WANT variables) is for autoconf-2.1x, calling autom4te in that mode should result in an error? In that case we should have at least an error that briefly explains this.
Created attachment 7606 [details] /usr/lib/autoconf/ac-wrapper.pl Yeah, guess. Here is a fixed version.
Re-closing as fixed.
