Description Javier Cano 2006-08-17 21:26:48 UTC
Hi!

I tried to boot with the following CDs images on my iMac G5 (first model, no isght) and the system was hang up every time! i tried the following CDs:

Gentoo 2006.0 minimal ppc

Gentoo 2006.0 minimal ppc64

Gentoo 2006.0 universal ppc64

I have no chance to change or try anything since the system just hangs up and there is no response from keyboard or mouse...

Regards!

PS: Yes, I am going to try Gentoo 2006.0 universal ppc

We have Imac users that can use our media so i think we'll be able to help you. Can you provide more information about what the failure is? The last thing that happens before the failure? Have you tried passing video options for framebuffer?

Also, please try this disc -> http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/experimental/ppc64/livecd/install-ppc64-minimal-dual-core-2006.0-32ul.iso

And it would be great if you could join us on irc on the #gentoo-ppc64 channel. We'll be happy to assist.

Hello

Thanks for your message. I tried the gentoo in the link you sent and it booted successfully... Now I am downloading the universal ppc (not 64) CD... I have a wireless connection that it is not detected... So I need the universal installation...

By the way. My computer is: iMac G5 1.8 GHz(first version, no isight, no revision), 1 GB RAM with an airport card added after buying it.
The error in the other systems was:

The screen shows the boot message, I press enter key, some messages appears, the screen goes black, I can hear the CD reading and after this nothing else happens apart from the noise of the wind-system... The screen keeps black. To exit I have to turn off the computer. I did not try passing video options forframebuffer. I used the default options at boot.

Thank you again and regards

Hi, I tried gentoo linux universal 2006.0 ppc.
The following happens, by the way, I think it appens the same with one of the other options I write. Sorry, I remember it when I saw the message:

"calling quesce...
returning 0x01400000 from prom_init

Invalid memory access at %SRR0: 00000000.01403778 %SRR1: 10000000.00083030

Apple PowerMac 8 ... (information about the Apple boot system)

To continue booting type "mac-boot" and press return
To shut down, type "shut down" and press return

Release keys to continue!"

After this the keyboard is hung up.
I hope the information will be useful.
I will use the link you gave me...

Thanks and regards!

Hi,

So if I understood you correctly, the "dual-core" iso worked for you but you need a universal version of it right? Unfortunately we do not have that available as dual-core was considered experiemental when that was released. However, I do have a beta CD you can use that would support your IMAC and has the stages, snapshot, and distfiles needed for a networkless install.

Are you interested in the CD? if so, please let me know and I will email you the location of the iso seperately. There will be a couple of hurdles you will need to work around but that should be OK as I can explain them to you.

Please try the universal iso for 2006.1. It's now on the mirrors. Check out -> http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/releases/ppc/2006.1/ppc64/installcd/ as an example.

I'm marking this FIXED; please try 2006.1 and if it works, please close.

Ummm... no.

That mirror is broken. I have informed infrastructure.

2006.1 is *not* released.

I have the same issue with the current minimal install .iso, I get the same "release keys to continue message". For what its worth, I get the same message with slackintosh.
