Description Nicola 2006-08-07 10:43:13 UTC
grsecurity was released for kernel-2.6.17.7 about a week ago

http://www.grsecurity.net/

why the current stable hardened-sources use 2.6.16 and a daily snapshot of grsecurity?
Comment 1 solar (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-07 10:48:14 UTC
Your question is unclear if you are asking one.
Comment 2 Nicola 2006-08-07 11:39:41 UTC
I'm asking why the current stable hardened-sources doesn't use the official grsecurity release and a 2.6.17 kernel

grsecurity doesn't support 2.6.16:

http://forums.grsecurity.net/viewtopic.php?t=1518

gentoo-sources-2.6.17-* is stable since a while, so my questions are:

-why hardened sources aren't bumped to the last kernel and the last official grsecuriy patch?
- why not test 2.6.17 and the new grsec and make it stable when ready?
Comment 3 solar (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-07 12:06:35 UTC
simply answer is simply. cuz noone has gotten around to it yet.

A bit of a belated reply but...

There is quite a lot of effort and care taken when we roll the 2.6 hardened-sources releases to ensure they are stable, of high quality and secure. I'd much prefer for our efforts to be spent getting the work done cleanly and professionally than releasing under-par into testing.
