Openoffice doesn't build with my "normal" LINGUAS setting ( LINGUAS="en fr zh_CN vi el de en_US" ), but LINGUAS="" emerge openoffice works. This is on a ppc64 processor, with 32 bits userland, gcc-4.1, 1GB RAM, but I believe two have similar problems on my x86 laptop (much slower, that makes testing more difficult) $ emerge --info Portage 2.1-r1 (default-linux/ppc/ppc64/2006.1/32bit-userland/970/pmac, gcc-4.1.1, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.17-gentoo-r4 ppc64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17-gentoo-r4 ppc64 PPC970FX, altivec supported Gentoo Base System version 1.6.15 app-admin/eselect-compiler: [Not Present] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.17 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.3.13-r3 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r4 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="ppc" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=G5 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing" CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/X11/app-default /etc/X11/gdm/Init /etc/X11/gdm/PostLogin /etc/X11/gdm/PostSession /etc/X11/gdm/PreSession /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions /etc/X11/gdm/modules /etc/X11/mwm /etc/X11/rstart /etc/X11/sysconfig/ /etc/X11/xdm//usr/share/texmf/ /etc/bash_completion.d/ /etc/dbus-1/ /etc/env.d /etc/gconf /etc/gimp/ /etc/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/ /etc/init.d/ /etc/mono/ /etc/pam.d/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/skel/ /etc/sound/events/ /etc/ssl/misc/ /etc/terminfo /etc/udev /etc/vim/ /etc/wget /usr/X11R6/lib/ /usr/lib/X11/" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=G5 -maltivec -mabi=altivec -fno-strict-aliasing" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sandbox sfperms strict userpriv usersandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/www.ibiblio.org/gentoo/ http://mirror.ovh.net/gentoo-distfiles/ ftp://mirror.ovh.net/gentoo-distfiles/" LANG="fr_FR.utf8" LC_ALL="fr_FR.utf8" LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1" LINGUAS="en fr zh_CN vi el de en_US" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.europe.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="ppc X Xaw3d acl alsa altivec apache2 beagle berkdb bitmap-fonts bonobo bzip2 c++ cairo cdr chm cjk cli cups dbus djvu dlloader doc dri dvd dvdr dvi eds emboss encode esd evo f77 flac font-server foomaticdb fortran freetype gcc64 gdbm gif gimpprint ginac gnome gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 guile hal imagemagick imlib isdnlog jpeg libg++ libwww mad maildir math mikmod mono motif mozsvg mp3 mpeg mysql nautilus ncurses network nfs nls nptl nptlonly offensive ogg ole opengl pam pcre pda pdf pdflib perl png ppds pppd python qhull quicktime readline reflection samba sdl seamonkey session slp sox spell spl spreadsheet ssl svg t1lib tcpd tetex theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode usb userlocales vim-with-x vorbis xml xorg xv zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse input_devices_evdev kernel_linux linguas_en linguas_fr linguas_zh_CN linguas_vi linguas_el linguas_de linguas_en_US userland_GNU video_cards_radeon video_cards_fbdev video_cards_vesa" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS,
Created attachment 93432 [details] Log of the failed emerge LINGUAS=""en fr zh_CN vi el de en_US"
Created attachment 93433 [details] Log of the successful emerge (No LINGUAS) (Not the correct log) LINGUAS=""
Further test shows that LINGUAS="en fr zh_CN vi el de en_US" is correctly emerged. I guess therefore that the problem comes from the chinese language (LINGUAS="zh_CN")

Why do you think zh_CN is the culprit if the emerge worked for you with this LINGUAS-setting above?
(In reply to comment #4) > > Don't quite get this. Why do you think zh_CN is the culprit if the emerge > worked for you with this LINGUAS-setting above? Sorry, I've cut'n pasted the wrong string... The LINGUAS-setting which works is LINGUAS="en fr vi el de en_US". (everything but zh_CN)
Now, everything works fine. I don't understand why, but it means it's time for me to close this bug. Sorry for the noise.
Bug disappeared magically, case closed.
