Debian wakeonlan contains a patch from Timo Weingärtner which allows it to be used like 'wakeonlan yourhost' or 'wakeonlan 192.168.0.8' so you dont have to remember hardware addresses. It does this by evaluating /etc/ethers. Small change, big win. The original debian bug and patch is here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=296825 The current debian source (original and patched) and changelog is here: http://packages.debian.org/unstable/source/wakeonlan I would be very happy to see the change in gentoo. Thanks.
thanks for the suggestion, implemented in wakeonlan-0.41-r1
