Hi, Just a question. When I install Slackware-8.1 on my PC on my second partition I notice that slack was REALLY fastest then Gentoo. Why? I have an AthlonXP 1700+. The slack uses flags for 486. Slack uses gcc2. My Gentoo is 1.4_rc2 and my flags are: -O3 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse I really doesn't understand the performace of slack been MUCH better then my Gentoo. I notice that lack of performance with Mozilla too. When I get the binaries they are really more faster then the mozilla compiled on Gentoo. I don't know the cause, so I am asking: It is an error of mine? Did I forgot some IMPORTANT optimization flag? Answer me PLEASE! Thanx a lot, I cannot live without portage, Bernardo S. A. Silva
did you enabled the preempt option in kernel ? do you use hdparm to enable DMA and tune your hdd ?
Hi Martin, Yes and yes. preempt kenrel and hdparm. The diference are not on kernel or hardware. As I said, when I run Mozilla (compiled) on Gentoo it is slowest then Mozilla (bin) on Gentoo. Why? Thanxs... Bernardo S. A. Silva
Because gcc3 is a big bad bug that they had trown out to the world to try and get debugged. For this reason a too optimized gcc3 compiled mozilla breaks in many cases, so have to cut down on the optimizations. What must I now do ? Put out a fast mozilla, one that segfault every now and then, or maybe not even start? Or should it be more reliable, but slower ? We are being forced more and more into using it, but it miscompiles, and are damn slow :/
This looks like a good candidate for closure, it seems like it belongs summarized in a FAQ on the website rather than here in bugzilla.
To summarize, GCC 3 is Satan and its seed should be wiped from the earth.
