Same problem here with x86 architecture.
A new release of em8300 will soon be out that supports 2.6.17. Otherwise I'll create a version that works with 2.6.17.
Fixed after 2.6.16-Gentoo-19 Fully AMD64 System Pentium4 630. Gentoo Sources. Same config and dependencies. Same card.
