Description Neil Katin 2006-07-21 07:42:35 UTC
In the "diskless install using pxeboot" section of the
altinstall document:

The instructions for how to modify grub to support pxebooting
are obsolete. There is now a "netboot" use flag that can be
passed to sys-boot/grub that generates the proper files. I
think the instructions would be a bit more streamlined if
they reflected this.

Thanks.

Okay, so grub uses netboot . . . so what needs to change in the docs? What should be different?

CCing the grub maintainers in hopes that they'd know, and can tell us what changes in the guide. Major cookies for them if they do!

After much sifting through the forums and re-checking forum posts and re-re-re-checking user experiences (ad nauseum), I came up with this addition to the guide. Seems that the 'netboot' USE flag provides everything you need, so it's just a matter of copying it from /usr/lib/foo to /diskless/foo, rather than building the source manually. grub.lst still seems to be the file to edit (rather than grub.conf on a normal installation w/disks).

Please review, comment, and, if possible, test out, as I don't have the hardware.

I was right! And, more to the point, reading the ebuild answered questions. It goes to the trouble of putting pxegrub in /usr/lib/grub/ for the user to move wherever desired, and sets up grub.lst as a symlink to grub.conf, so the user can edit either.

Well done, grub maintainers! Nice ebuild. :)

Anyway, thanks to the original reporter. Fixed in CVS.
