While examining bug 139406 I tried to switch to vanilla-sources-2.6.18_rc2. But I could not successfully boot my system using this kernel: 1. I got an oops for bttv while coldplugging using udev. 2. Finishing the udev coldplugging ("Letting udev process events") takes extremely long, after all kernel messages are done. 3. Autoloading modules fails, although for different modules. 4. After clearing the autoload list, startup hangs when loading sound modules, again for different modules at different boots. Starting with init=/bin/bash and manually loading modules seems to work, except for bttv which causes an oops even then.
Created attachment 92196 [details] /var/log/dmesg including bttv oops This is a dmesg from a startup with empty autoload list. You can see the bttv Oops.
Created attachment 92198 [details] /var/log/syslog of boot hung loading sound modules This is the syslog to go with the dmesg from comment 1. As the autoload list was empty, I got as far as loading ALSA modules, and hung there loading the first sound module. The system responded to Ctrl+Alt+Del, so I could shut it down, which explains the last five lines. I see nothing concerning the hang itself.
