using "parallel_startup" in /etc/conf.d/rc causes ntp client to fail. ntp client  is unable to set the time correctly.

name resolution fails. I have a static IP setup and acess DSL over a router.

try with baselayout-1.12.x

parallel startup is known to have issues in 1.11.x and we arent going to be fixing them ... better to stabilize 1.12.x
