The myspell-de hyphenation directory found in the portage's ebuild is apparently older than the version found on the igerman98's site. The later (newer) one is also that version that is found and loaded via the DictOOO assistant in OpenOffice. the myspell-de-20060316 version: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 42600 2002-06-08 14:20 hyph_de_DE.dic the igerman98 version found in http://j3e.de/myspell/hyph_de_DE.zip: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 50110 2006-01-24 22:10 hyph_de_DE.dic The later version is better in hyphenating words; it can be tested with the German word "unmittelbar". The corresponding ebuild should be updated to the newer version. It's possible that this problem affects other myspell ebuilds, too, but I haven't checked for this.
Thanks for the report - I'll get to it next week. I don't monitor all 42 language myspell ebuilds for newer dictionaries; I rely on users of each language to bug me to update them if a better version becomes available.
Note to self: also check out hunspell dictionary available at http://j3e.de/hunspell/ which may be superior to the old myspell dictionary
Anyone to upgrade to the igerman98 version, please? It's over a year that I filled this bug report... :-(
Reassigning due to retirement

Thank you for report Christoph Schulz. It took too long, sorry. Updated package is in the tree (myspell-de-20080915). BTW, I've took version suggested by openoffice upstream: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries#German_.28Germany.2C_....29 But they are based on dictionary which could be found on igerman98 site, so I suppose it should work too.
