Description ReLx7 2006-07-11 04:27:44 UTC
Intel 8x0 (uli/ali AC97 onboard) + linux-2.6.16-gentoo-r11 built-in alsa + gst-streamer-alsa-0.8.11 + alsa-lib-1.0.11 produces a crappy/echo/clipping sound in for example gst-properties test with alsasink. All the other alsa-apps without gstreamers works fine.

When i downgrade to alsa-lib-1.0.10 the sound in gst-properties test is fine, so i use alsa-lib-1.0.10 now.

Because i only use the stable tree i think it's strange that alsa-lib-1.0.11 is in the stable tree, because apperently it doesn't work good for me.

gstreamer 0.8 is an old stable branch that is only maintained for crucial bug fixed. You may be better off upgrading apps that use it to the ones that use gstreamer 0.10.
Comment 2 ReLx7 2006-07-11 07:26:00 UTC
I use the latest stable gnome (gnome-2.12.3) and the ebuild says:

=media-libs/gstreamer-0.8*
=media-libs/gst-plugins-0.8*

When I install gst-plugins-alsa-0.10.4 the problem remains.
Comment 3 ReLx7 2006-07-11 07:36:38 UTC
I use only stable packages. Is that wrong?

I think that bugs in the stable branch are more important, then bugs in the unstable branch.
Comment 4 Zaheer Abbas Merali (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-11 08:31:43 UTC
GStreamer 0.10 is the stable branch. GStreamer 0.8 is in low maintenance mode and will probably never see a new release.

GStreamer 0.10 is also stable in portage.

Gnome 2.14 is also very soon to be stable.

However patches that solve this problem are welcome.
Comment 5 ReLx7 2006-07-11 14:17:15 UTC
alsa-lib-1.0.11-r1 makes the same awful noise.
Comment 6 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-06-27 15:17:48 UTC
Please, try with something that's actually in the tree now (1.0.14_rc2 is the latest stable on amd64 ATM).
