Installing wmaker requires libXft > 2.1.0, but this is not listed as a dependency in the ebuild (at least as of 8-July-2006) , causing the compliation to error out.     Workaround is simply to manually emerge libXft first, then install windowmaker, and everything continues normally.

Turned out to be a seriously borked install of many different components.  More complicated than I thought, but all user error.  Sorry.
