When one brings up a man page one gets all of these ugly ESC sequences. E.g., ***************************************************************************** > man gcc: GCC(1) GNU GCC(1) ESC[1mNAMEESC[0m gcc - GNU project C and C++ compiler ESC[1mSYNOPSISESC[0m gcc [ESC[1m-cESC[22m|ESC[1m-SESC[22m|ESC[1m-EESC[22m] [ESC[1m-std=ESC[4m ESC[22mstandardESC[24m] ************************************************************** This is supposed to be due to a bug in groff-1.18.1 that is fixed in groff-1.18.2. Supposedly troff-1.18.2 fixes this. However, troff-1.18.1 is the current gentoo version. A work-around is to set the PAGER environmental variable to 'less -R'.
try #emerge -u world --deep
Actually this is fixed in man-1.5k-r1, which should be installed via PDEPEND after groff ... check that you have it ?
I am able to reproduce the problem with man-1.5k-r1. Another workaround is to set PAGER=/bin/more
I followed Martin Holzer's advice (BTW, Martin, thanks!) and did a emerge -u world --deep This resolved my problem with viewing man pages.
Guess it could have been less not being updated ?
BTW, dont seem like 1.18.2 is out yet.
