Description Łukasz Damentko (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-07 10:40:01 UTC
Modular Xorg is stable now and therefore we have to make some changes to our xorg-config guide.

What is necessary is to add information about VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES variables. I believe that the rest of the guide should work ok.

Donnie, please tell us if there's anything else that should be added/changed in this guide.

Definitely should link to the modular X migration guide.

One other change worth noting (there's nothing about xdm in the current X guide at all) is the addition of /etc/conf.d/xdm. This means DISPLAYMANAGER should be set there rather than /etc/rc.conf (although rc.conf still works and indeed overrides /etc/conf.d/xdm). Also, xdm now starts earlier in the boot process. To disable this for any reason and return to the old behavior, change the XSTATICVT setting.

In your diff, please mention the nv/nvidia difference and the radeon/fglrx difference as well -- the choice of binary or open drivers, and probably that nv's open drivers are useless for 3D.

Also, note that in xorg-x11-7.1, the VIDEO_CARDS and INPUT_DEVICES are displayed for xorg-server rather than xorg-x11 -- most non-x86-based arches are stable on 7.1, so please mention this.

better patch

Here's a new patch.

Changes:

1. Now we suggest using nvidia and flgrx proprietary drivers but mention also open nv/radeon choices - explaining drawbacks of nv drivers.
2. Added links to ati-faq.xml and nvidia-guide.xml for users to read more about the drivers they are going to install and use
3. Added note that flags may be shown for xorg-server rather than xorg-x11 package on different arches and in different versions of xorg
4. Added "Resources" section with a link to the migration to x7 guide.
5. Added there also a link to our desktop docs section - as guides there describe most of the logical steps made after installing Xorg (KDE, GNOME, so on).

What wasn't done:
No XDM configuration section, it wasn't here before for some reason and i'm not sure if i should add it. It may be done separately later on if needed.

Grammer/Sentence fixes

Just cleaned up the patch a bit, on rane's request :)

Thanks fox2mike. It's in CVS now.
