I have older PC Dell Poweredge 300, a Pentium3, and used gentoo-nofb nox or gentoo installs and errors out on cannot mount boot cd on hdc. livecd 20030911 P3 v1.4 works fine.
Just tried x86-mini-2004.3-r1 livecd and same type of error cannot mount cd. Steve

Is the CD-ROM SCSI? If so, you'll need to pass 'doscsi' to the kernel to load the proper modules.
cd-rom is ide but seems to be interfaced through an adaptec7860 controller. installing Gentoo forum topic number 267325 seems to describe my problem, but is 2 years old. Does another way exist around this problem? Steve
Try booting with doscsi.
Since the Adaptec driver is only started with "doscsi" (which I think has changed since 1.4), I'm going to mark this as FIXED. If it is, in fact, not fixed, please REOPEN the bug when you have some time to work with us to troubleshoot it further.
