i just upgraded to sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.17-r1, and experienced 800 fps in glxgears insted of 2500. the performance loss was visible in quake3, warzone2100, and any other glx using program. my mouse cursor flickered while starting gnome-terminal. my upgrade was correct, by make oldconfig, modules-rebuild i even rebuild nvidia-glx with no luck. if i boot back to 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 everything is fine. emerge --info Portage 2.1.1_pre2-r2 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-4.1.1/vanilla, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.16-gentoo-r9 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.12.1 distcc 2.18.3 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [disabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.60 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.17 sys-devel/gcc-config: 2.0.0_rc1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon -mtune=athlon -pipe " CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/share/X11/xkb" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/splash /etc/terminfo" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=athlon -mtune=athlon -pipe " DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" LC_ALL="en_US.UTF-8" LINGUAS="en hu ro" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://gw/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X acpi alsa avi bash-completion browserplugin bzip2 cairo cdparanoia cdr css cups dga divx4linux dri dvd dvdr dvdread encode erandom esd evolution exif fbsplash firefox foomaticdb fpu gd gif gimpprint glitz gmail gnome gnutls gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal howl imap ithreads jabber jpeg kqemu libnotify live lm_sensors maildir mbox mbrola mime mmx mmxext mozdevelop mozilla mozmail moznocompose moznoirc moznoroaming mozsvg mp3 mpeg mplayer mtrr mysql nautilus ncurses nptl nptlonly nvidia ogg openal opengl oss pam pdflib perl png ppds python quicktime readline rtc screen sdl softmmu sox sse sse2 ssl startup-notification subtitles svg tcpd truetype udev unicode usb userlocales utf8 vcd video_cards_nvidia vorbis win32codecs xine xml xorg xprint xscreensaver xv xvid xvmc zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux linguas_en linguas_hu linguas_ro userland_GNU video_cards_nv video_cards_vesa" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LDFLAGS, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS

Thank you for your bug, this seems to be a known issue: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72040 Could you try disabling HPET in your configuration, it looks to me like everyone with this issue has that enabled as a common factor.

i disabled HPET , not HPET_TIMER, and the problem is there in 2.6.17-gentoo-r2
Appears to be an nvidia-kernel bug
The issue is fixed in 2.6.18 kernels and later.
