(PS: jakub, I did search for this one quite a bit, but did not find anything.  my guess is that I missed it, like earlier ones.  hopefully, this report will enter the search docs, to point at the probably earlier filed bug report somewhere else.)

fascinating...I hand emerged all the other files (except gcc) first.  then I emerged gcc---and now it compiled without trouble.
