I know there is a bug report for mc-4.6.0_pre1-r2, but as its status 
was 'resolved' I thought I would open another report...

mc-4.6.0_pre2 still does it:

1869509776 Jan 13 22:44 mc.hlp.es -> 1.7G

and it keeps goint for hungarian, italian and so on...

Yes this is a very rare occurance, and its noted upstream where the mc devs even
can't figure out whats actually causing it....possibly due to mixed versions of
autoconf/make

best bet is to fall back to 4.5.55 or maybe the original pre1
