Are you by chance trying to put "viceo" into SANE_BACKENDS?
I apologize. I did some more reading after submitting this bug, and it's not a problem with the ebuild at all. I was attempting to install sane-backends using the viceo driver (in SANE_BACKENDS). I have read that viceo was taken out of sane-backends around 1.0.5 or 1.0.9 because the author couldn't release it under GPL. Guess I'll be buying another scanner :( Sorry for tying you up with something that you can't do anything about.
