When booting my machine with gentoo LiveCD 1.4rc2 Pentium3, it locks up during Partition check... more specifically when checking the partitions on my HPT370 raid controller, /dev/ide/host2/bus0/target0/lun0: System: P3-800EB, Soyo 6BA+100 i think (1 disk, IBM60GXP on HPT370), Adaptec AHA-2940UW (1 disk, IBM)... the IBM60GXP has only 1 partition, FAT32 60GB... tried all of the bootoptions with no result... i remember i used to have troubles in Debian a while back...and had to supply ide2=0xd800,0xd802 or something similar to get it to detect the controller...but that was way back on 2.2.x kernels and the livecd claims that ide2=0xc800-0xc807, i don't really understand why the adresses would change...but then again i'm no expert at hardware..
Try the 13 Jan 2003 livecd from the experimental/x86/livecd directory and see if that helps. It includes IDE updates, and may or may not fix things for you. Post results (good/bad) here.
Tried the Experimental with the same results...however it does boot fine on my Compaq Evo N160 Notebook where as the LiveCD 1.4rc2 didn't..but that's another story..
I have since the bug report installed Debian on the box and had exactly the same problems when compiling the kernel... Finally i got it to run, i haven't gotten around to getting the exact modules needed for booting... I believe it was some EIDE modules and the Experimental Raid modules for Highpoint raid...that finally made me able to run linux... The kernel i used was 2.4.18, but i had the same problems with 2.4.20... anyway...get back to this later...
