perhaps you need to WANT_AUTOMAKE to something specific

Yes, doing "export WANT_AUTOMAKE_1_4=1" solved the error, thank you.  But how 
would one know to do this, in general and where is there information on the 
usage of this variable? My web searches find almost nothing about it.  Any 
help?
