Since a few days, starting xemacs - either locally or from a remote machine - causes the local X server to crash. This seems to be independent of desktop environments, as I could reprodruce the crash with both KDE and FVWM2 so far. It also doesn't matter what the remote machine is (I tried to run different versions of xemacs from Solaris 9 (Sparc) and RHEL 4 (AMD 64) machines with the same result). Portage 2.1.1_pre1-r1 (default-linux/x86/2006.0, gcc-4.1.1/hardened, glibc-2.4-r3, 2.6.17.1 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.17.1 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.12.1 dev-lang/python: 2.4.3-r1 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r5 dev-util/ccache: [Not Present] dev-util/confcache: [Not Present] sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1-r2 sys-devel/gcc-config: [Not Present] sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.22 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/X11/xkb /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/eselect/compiler /etc/gconf /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" DISTDIR="/gentoo/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/gentoo/ http://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ ftp://ftp-stud.fht-esslingen.de/pub/Mirrors/gentoo/ ftp://mirrors.sec.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de/gentoo/ http://ftp.easynet.nl/mirror/gentoo/ http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo http://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/mirrors/gentoo http://gentoo.osuosl.org" LINGUAS="de" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --delete-after --stats --timeout=180 --exclude='/distfiles' --exclude='/local' --exclude='/packages'" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/gentoo/build" PORTDIR="/gentoo/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/gentoo/build/overlay" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="x86 X Xaw3d a52 aac acl acpi activefilter akode alsa aotuv apache2 audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bzip2 caps cdda cddb cdio cdparanoia chipcard cli cpudetection crypt cups curl dbus dlloader doc dri dtaus dts dvd dvdread edl emacs emboss fam ffmpeg flac font-server foomaticdb fuse gd-external gdbm geldkarte gif glut gnutls gpg2-experimental gpm gstreamer gtk2 hal hardened hbci httpd i8x0 icq idn imagemagick imap imlib ipppd irmc isdnlog jpeg jpeg2k kcal kde kdehiddenvisibility latex lcms ldap ldapsam libg++ libwww lzo mad madwifi maildir mbox mime mjpeg mng motif mozsvg mp3 mpeg mplayer mule musicbrainz ncurses nls no-old-linux noantlr nobcel nobeanutils nobsh nocommonslogging nocommonsnet nojdepend nojsch nojython nolog4j nooro noregexp norhino noxalan noxerces nptl nptlonly nsplugin ofx ogg oggvorbis openexr opengl pam pam_console pcre pdf pdflib perl perlsuid pg-intdatetime pic png ppds pppd pwdb python qt quicktime rdesktop readline real reflection rtc samba savedconfig session slp socks5 speedo speex spell spl sql sse ssl stream subversion svg symlink sysfs tcpd tetex theora threads tiff toolbar truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev unicode userlocales vcd vidix vim-pager vim-with-x vlm vorbis win32codecs wxwindows xine xml xorg xosd xprint xscreensaver xv xvid xvmc zeroconf zlib elibc_glibc input_devices_keyboard input_devices_mouse kernel_linux linguas_de userland_GNU video_cards_i810" Unset: CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
I need your xorg-server version, the version of whatever driver you're using, /var/log/Xorg.0.log (preferably one from a crashed system, it may be moved to Xorg.0.log.old) and /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Please reopen when those are attached.

However, I don't think the problem is related to video hardware, since I can reproduce the problem on to machines with different video hardware. Please let me know if you need anything else.

The video driver on the other machine is xf86-video-i810-1.6.0.
I see the same problem with the Opera 9 beta - I thought it was just something wrong with Opera, since none of my other browsers caused it. What USE flags is xemacs compiled with?
(In reply to comment #10) > What USE flags is xemacs compiled with? [ebuild R ] app-editors/xemacs-21.4.19 USE="X Xaw3d gpm jpeg ldap motif mule nas png postgres tiff -athena -berkdb -canna -dnd -freewnn -neXt -xface" However, I don't think it matters, because, as I wrote before, the problem is caused by starting xemacs either locally or remote, regardless of remote xemacs version or remote operating system.
Tried again yesterday, and the problem no longer exists. I can only guess, but it seems that the last libX11 update (to 1.0.3) fixed it.
