Description Timo Boettcher 2006-06-21 06:18:10 UTC
when looking for details of a specific, known package, it becomes hard to find the package with packages.gentoo.org, because p.g.o works more like "emerge -S" then "emerge -p".
for example, when searching for the web-browser opera (www-client/opera) with http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=opera, the first hit is
"ibuffer Description: Operate on buffers like dired". the web-browser isn't even listed on the first page of results. It isn't possible to search for "www-client/opera" with http://packages.gentoo.org/search/?sstring=www-client%2Fopera
. The only ways to find it, is searching for "opera" and cliecking throught the result-pages (it isn't even possible to jump to a specific result-page, you have to go through next/previous).

http://www.gentoo-portage.com/Search?search=opera lists exact matches in the package name, first.

I would suggest p.g.o to return results in the following order: exact matches of the package-name, exact matches of the packgae-category, and matches of the package-description.
