Description Wernfried Haas (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-06-21 03:53:13 UTC
Opening this bug as a consequence of the recent GWN-thread on -core (see Message-Id: <1150659621.24711.55.camel@localhost>).
In this week's GWN patrick added a section to the GWN draft, that made him Operational lead of the GWN.

It may be subject to discussion if that is nice and respectful behaviour wrt to Ulrich (the current lead), however the main problem is that this may be a clear violation of policy - according to our policy leads are selected by the members of the project.

In GWN's case, the only listed member is Ulrich according to their project page. I think this doesn't reflect reality and patrick has been working for the project for some time now, as have others probably too. In any way, no form of election or lottery has been held, which i think is a violation of policy.

I second what amne stated. As mentioned in my mail to -core (
Message-Id: <1150811955.11207.10.camel@otto.xscherb.intra>) I tried to discuss this before the draft has been published, IRC log attached. I think the reasons why I consider such actions bad behaviour (besides it's against our policy) are quite obvious, if not please tell me.

CC'ing klieber@g.o

Kurt: As you're listed as PR lead, this bug is yours, unless you want to
delegate it to devrel.

OK, this is easily solved. Patrick isn't the operational lead. Ulrich is. Patrick can claim anything he wants, but that doesn't make it reality.

Now, Patrick has a point in that, since Ulrich is MIA right now, someone needs to step up and do the job. So far, he's been the only person stepping up to do the work.

Personally, I think it's a bit premature to be worrying about selecting a new operational lead. Ulrich has been with the project a long time and has always been reliable. Let's give him some time to work through whatever personal issues that are keeping him incommunicado.

If we get to the point where we do need to find a leader and folks don't want Patrick to fulfill that role, then they'd better have another candidate willing to step up and take on the significant responsibilities associated with publishing a weekly newsletter.

Patrick, even though you may not have the official title of operational lead, I certainly appreciate the fact that you've kept the newsletter going while Ulrich has been MIA. I'm one of the few folks who knows exactly how much work it can be.

GWN seems to be reasonably straightened out; any objections to closing?
Comment 5 Wernfried Haas (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-06 14:31:38 UTC
As policy has been followed i'm fine with closing.
