I guess there should be some sort of -fPIC option for it:

/usr/sbin/prelink: /usr/bin/db4.3_upgrade: Cannot prelink against non-PIC shared library /usr/lib/libdb-4.3.so

(one of these errors for each of the distribution executables in db-4.3)

re-emerging solved it, not sure what changed in between
