I have a circular dependicie with glitz because XGL wants glitz-5.* but cairo-1.0.4 wants glitz-4.4 .

XGL? Yeah, so fix it yourself, it's not in portage.

Patch to x11-libs/cairo-1.0.4.ebuild

This problem has nothing to do with XGL, as both packages in question are in standard portage. It just so happens that XGL requires the newer version of glitz. This simply changes cairo's dependancy of glitz to allow the newer version.
