First of all i think good to create some default database (sure with random password, set in config and also created in mysql, if "mysql" use flag set). Second - there is permission problems. By default /etc/zabbix have 750 chmod, but owner of it root:root. I think good enough root:zabbix, the same related to config. Also /var/run/zabbix and /var/log/zabbix owned by root, i think cause write permission required, good to make chown zabbix for them.

Created attachment 95074 [details] zabbix-server-1.1.1.ebuild I used this in my overlay, move to new version, added info about Postgres in 1.1.2 and changed owner of /etc/zabbix and /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.conf.
I can also help with zabbix as would like to go deeper into Gentoo. Let me know if you wish Wolfram (or someone else).
verified permission issues are fixed with 1.1.6. sorry it took so long! :(
