When I run aplay the first time after I boot, I get a segmentation fault, and the following message from the kernel:

ck-sources is not a supported kernel. [1] Reopen if you can reproduce w/ latest gentoo or vanilla sources.

Thanks, I wasn't aware ck-sources is not supported. Using gentoo-sources indeed solved the problem.
