I kept getting something like
> man gcc
/usr/bin/nroff: invalid option -c

The problem appears to be from this line in /etc/man.conf:
NROFF          /usr/bin/nroff -c -mandoc

I'd guess the "-c" switch shouldn't be there.

should be fixed with groff 1.18.1
