Ffrom the man page:

"The 2nd char is the setting from the /etc/make.profile/use.defaults ...."

But there is no /etc/make.profile/use.defaults (at least at my system ?).

Of course there is...

# readlink /etc/make.profile
../usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0

might be I'm stupid, but:

n22 /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0 # pwd
/usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0
n22 /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0 # find . -name use.defaults
n22 /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0 #

I find neither the file /etc/make.profile/use.defaults nor the file /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/x86/2006.0/use.defaults
